A teacher plays many roles. Other than teaching, discuss 3 major
roles of a teacher.
Introduction
The mission of education in Malaysia
are; 1) to develop a world class quality education system which will identify
and polished the full potential of the individual and fulfil the aspiration of
the Malaysian nation, 2) to produce loyal and united Malaysians and 3) to
produce happy, well-mannered individuals, who have faith, full of knowledge and
vision. Obviously the goal of education in Malaysia is to develop human capital,
with ideal behaviour and full of potential as an important resource person for
a world-class country. Therefore, as an implementer, all teachers must have a
strong education background, appropriate attitude, good motivation, proactive,
innovative, caring and full of loves.
Teachers play a vital
role in the students’ lives in and outside classroom. Teachers function is
not only teaching, but the most important thing they must be able
to educate students. Teachers also serve many other roles such as
creating a warm environment that supports and allows optimum learning
process, mentoring and nurturing children, become role models, looking for
signs of problem, as well as preparing the student’s maturity development. Therefore,
the delivery of teaching or educating process must also include personal development, survival,
health, mental health, social behaviour, morale, self image and attitude.
Promoter
for Student’s Personality Development
The media often reported the moral decay
and discipline problem among youngsters. Fights, drug addiction, gambling, free sex and
theft are examples involving some students that occur inside and outside school
hours. This reflects the seriousness of the problems plaguing the formation of
students' behaviour at present. The problem was tarnished by many negative
things around student’s environment. Mix outside the school with a group of
mischievous and neglect their studies will formed a problematic student.
Students with discipline problems usually consist of students who do not have a
good personality and behaviour. This is due to failure of their families and
communities to build and polish their good character, or probably they don’t
have good role models to be emulated. Thus, the teacher should be the best
person to become an idol for the students. They have to play their role as the
embodiment of students' character, but how this role should be implemented?
Teachers should be the
best student’s companion. Teachers must look into the welfare and safety of their
students. They must equally fair to all students, regardless of family economic
factors, background, religion, culture, ethnic and education level. Teachers
need to be competent, adopt a good behaviour, wear an appropriate dress, polite,
firm, calm, and able to give opinion and suggestion.
Students spend more
than half of daytime with their teachers in the classroom, and therefore
teachers easily become their role model. Teachers should also be the best role
model not only outside the classroom and outside the school. Teachers are
highly respected by community and parents and they have to groom their potential
as a leader in the local community if needed. Thus, students, parents and the
local community will pay tribute to the teachers and motivate the younger
generation to make the teacher or the pupils as the best role models in the
community.
In conclusion,
qualified world-class quality teachers are who has a good personality, cultured
dissemination of knowledge with dedication, continuously updating and upgrading
their knowledge, competent, neat and be a role model of good moral values and
dedication to the assignment at anytime.
Identify
and Polish Student’s Talents and Potential
Students are our future; the world will
be in their hands. Potential or students talent have been highlighted now days,
other than academic excellence. This
is in line with the national education goals to build and polished individual
potential. Student talent in leadership, sports and arts should be tapped and
polished by teachers. Teacher’s knowledge, experience and instinct can be able
to identify student’s talents or skills. Thus, the teacher's role will be more
challenging as to create a sports champion, speakers, leaders, professionals,
artists and others. It starts in student’s very early life at school. National
leaders, athletes, professionals and artists are early developing at school.
Teachers must have
knowledge and skills for coaching. Coaching can be performed by individual or
groups of teachers. Co-curricular activities in school are examples of outdoor
activities that can be expressed and highlighted students’ potential talent.
Every school must provide adequate platform for students’ talent development.
Student participation in any competition will show student’s talents either at
school, district, state or national levels. Thus, teacher’s role in identifying
and polishing talent in various groups should be continued.
Enhanced
Parents-Teacher Associations Function
Parents and teachers are most related
element in educational system. Parents also have a role in teaching and educating informally.
Teachers serve to educate students’ formal education through national
curriculum guidelines. Excellence reflected students' education at home and school.
Both of these institutions are very important to produce excellent students.
Parents and teachers
need a platform to work together effectively for the development of students'
education and social behaviour. Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) is a
registered organization at school which was created, to be the backbone of the
education program in schools. PTA is a link between teachers and parents, in a
formal platform where they will be able to discuss consensus on financial,
human and educational support program is for students to excellence. The
teacher's role is very important to enable the association. The President of
the association is among parents, while the advisor and secretary are among
teachers. Other committee members are both among parents and teachers.
The role of PTA is planning joint academic
programs, co-curricular activities, school physical development, managerial
improvement and motivational program for students, parents and teachers excellence.
This platform, will give the chance for active discussion between teachers and
parents. Parents will be able to express their feeling and give opinion, such
as on Excellence Day, Progress Report Day, Annual Sports, camping and
motivational program.
Teachers may also
involve in an informal or formal meeting in the community; such as a mosque
committee member, shopping complex management team, shops owner, markets, other
departments and local authority in relation to education, school, students and
parents. Active involvement from local community and other agencies may boost
studentsand school excellence by providing a
healthy, safe, warm and exciting environment for learning, education and social
behaviour development. Thus, the role of the teacher is not only teaching and
educating students, but to create a good relationship with parents, other
agencies and communities.
Conclusion
Professionalism, who symbolizes world
quality teachers, is referring to the high commitment, love, caring, knowledge,
competence and appropriate ethics on their profession. Teachers’ roles are not
only lead a teaching in the classroom, but for development of social behaviour,
children’s maturity and personality development; identify and polish student’s
talent and finally development of optimum community norms and social support
